Three new sensitizing concepts are demonstrated to improve erbium-doped planar optical amplifiers: Si nanocrystals or Ag+ ions that both couple strongly to erbium ions and make the pump laser obsolete; and electrical pumping in a rare earth doped electroluminescent polymer
