  • Abstract
The most important reason of collision accident in navigation is the out-of-step of ships and that their actions are lack of compatibility. In order to raise the level of compatibility, some cooperation rules such as traffic rules are necessary. In the practice of the sailing, it is difficult to utilize signal control or designate middle lines as road traffic, with the equipment of AIS (automatic identification system), ships can talk with each other based on their exact information. Therefore, a communication mechanism through cooperative rules is necessary to let ships sail in cooperation to be safer and more efficient. This paper proposes such a communication mechanism, including communication messages, rules and message analysis method to realize cooperative navigation. By simulation, it is demonstrated that with this communication mechanism the efficiency of the whole system is raised
