  • Abstract
This paper summarizes the characteristics of distributed object models used in large-scale distributed software systems. We examine the common subset of requirements for distributed software systems and systems-on-a-chip (SoC), namely: openness, heterogeneity and multiple forms of transparency. We describe the application of these concepts to the emerging class of complex, parallel SoC´s, including multiple heterogeneous embedded processors interacting with hardware co-processors and I/O devices. An implementation of this approach is embodied in STMicroelectronics´ DSOC (distributed system object component) programming model. The use of this programming model for an architecture exploration of STs Nomadik mobile multimedia platform is described
