Abstract
Apart from tramways, where rail vehicles can be driven safely on sight, some means of train detection is universal to all modern railway signalling control systems. This paper examines why train detection is so vital to railway signalling and control systems, and highlights the main characteristics of the most common train detection systems in use today.
