Abstract
This paper summarizes the evolution of train control systems for mass transit railways over the last 100 years; from wayside signals, to cab signals, to profile-based systems, to communications-based train control systems. Operational and performance benefits realized with the newer technology systems are discussed, together with the challenges of implementing such systems. Standardization initiatives are also described and industry trends presented.
