Abstract :
Flexible AC transmission system (FACTS) are critical element that can transform a passive grid to an active one through advanced power management of grid voltage, reactive power and power flow. However, wide spread use of FACTS is limited by the state-of-the-art power electronics technology that is still being considered less reliable for the utility industry. In this paper, a megawatt modular voltage source converter (VSC) based on the emerging emitter turn-off (ETO) thyristor and heat pipe cooling system is introduced. Together with a modular controller technology, the modular VSC enables deployment of low cost FACTS controllers while improving the controller power density, dynamic performance, and reliability
