Abstract :
To observe the state and estimate parameters of nonlinear systems, many estimators have been proposed, many of them being nonlinear extensions of the Kalman filter. In Web handling and winder systems, some parameters such as roll radius and inertia can be approximated from measurements, but Young modulus of the Web, e.g. paper, is very sensitive to humidity and temperature but cannot be measures directly online. A filter based on second order polynomial approximations is used to observe the state of a winder (Web velocity and Web strain) and to estimate the Young modulus in each Web section and the viscous friction of each motor
