Abstract
The trend in power system development has been for HVDC transmission systems to be used, especially for longdistance transmission and to provide asynchronous interconnections. It is known that dc power modulation control can provide effective damping to inter area oscillations, which is a common issue in interconnected systems. In this paper, the design of a novel power modulation controller based on advanced nonlinear robust adaptive control theory is presented. A coordinated optimization algorithm based on genetic algorithm and ordinal optimization is proposed to optimize the parameters of the novel controller. A simple 3 area interconnected power system is used as a test system and computer simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the optimized controller in damping oscillations.
