Abstract :
There is increasing interest in high speed permanent magnet, brushless DC motors for a wide range of applications. This paper presents some electromagnetic design considerations specifically in the utility of the third-harmonic back-EMF in sensorless operation of high-speed brushless DC motors, including how to increase the third-harmonic airgap field and back-EMF by optimizing the pole arc of parallel-magnetized permanent magnets.
