Abstract :
James Roderick James made many contributions to the field of antennas and applied electromagnetics, including small antennas, antennas for mobile applications, analysis and in his later years, optical waveguides. However his contribution to the field of printed antennas is undoubtedly one of his most important legacies. In a time when a low profile antenna was a waveguide slot array, with its demanding manufacturing processes, his vision of a high quality antenna, made in the form of a printed circuit board, was revolutionary. His technical leadership helped to make the vision a reality and the dominance of papers related to printed antennas at international conferences stands witness to the significance of his achievement. This paper describes the work lead by him in terms of understanding of the action of printed antennas, modelling and innovation in antenna architecture.
