  • Abstract
The recent increasing demand for multimedia satellite services with high data rates forced the system designers to consider the use of 20-30 GHz and 40-50 GHz bands. At such frequencies, propagation impairments, especially rain attenuation, cause severe signal fading which requires propagation impairment mitigation techniques (PIMT). The design, optimization and performance assessment of PIMTs needs not only statistics but also time series of attenuation. Since attenuation measurements are not always at hand, synthesizers of rain attenuation time series are under study or have been already developed. In this contribution, a time series synthesizer, the experimental measurements based (EMB) model, based on real measured attenuation time series, is briefly described. The EMB model is based on a procedure for a "climatologic scaling" of attenuation time series. The performance of the model, which has been assessed versus measured statistics as for both first and second order statistics, is also presented.
