Abstract :
A ferrite loaded multi-turn loop antenna is proposed and evaluated for reception of FM radio in mobile phones. By co- designing the antenna element with an amplifier and using varactor diodes for frequency tuning, a G/T degradation compared to an ideal dipole antenna in a realistic urban environment of less than 23 dB over the entire FM band 88 - 108 MHz has been achieved. The antenna element occupies 1.5 cm3 and the circuits´ uses 1.5 cm2 PCB area. Theoretical and experimental results are presented together with design choice motivations and measurement procedures, including isolation measurements from a co-located GSM transmit antenna.
