Abstract
An improved understanding of the characteristics of phased arrays has been used to identify techniques to increase the bandwidth of operation. In particular, the mutual coupling has been found to be key to extending the bandwidth by reducing the lowest frequency of operation. The choice of radiating element plays a significant role, and by comparing the performance of arrays of two types of element, both generic and element specific techniques have been identified.
