Abstract
In this paper, we analyze the performance of two important mobility management protocols-MIPv6 and HMIPv6. Analytical model is developed for two mobility models- random walk and fluid flow to compute signaling cost, which consists of two components-location update cost and packet delivery cost. Both of these costs are computed as a function of session to mobility ratio (SMR). Through numerical results it is shown that HMIPv6 reduces location update cost by 40-60% for static users and 25-30% for dynamic users. Further, it is shown that HMIPv6 is highly sensitive to the user population and mobility anchor point (MAP) domain size.
