Abstract
There are occasions in setting generator protection relays where the effective application of a protection function requires detailed measurement and analysis of operational data from the machine. This paper identifies two such functions: split phase protection and 3rd harmonic neutral under-voltage protection and discusses the particular application issues associated with each. A new algorithm is presented that can respond to the influencing system conditions and automatically adapt these functions accordingly. The resulting protection schemes are more sensitive, less likely to mis operate, and are easier to set than their conventional counterparts.
