Abstract
This paper deals with a solid state voltage and frequency controller for an isolated wind energy conversion system (WECS) based on capacitor excited asynchronous generator (CEAG) and feeding an induction motor load. The proposed voltage and frequency controller consists of an IGBT (insulated gate bipolar junction transistor) based voltage source converter along-with battery energy storage system (BESS) at its DC link. By controlling the reactive and active power simultaneously, the proposed controller contcls the magnitude and frequency of the generated voltage. The proposed electro-mechanical system along with its controller is modeled and simulated in MATLAB using Simulink and PSB (power system block-set) toolboxes. The performance of the controller is studied under direct on line starting of a 3-phase induction motor and an application of the load torque, as well as uider the condition of varying wind speeds and it is observed that the proposed controller responds in desired manner as a voltage and frequency regulator, a load balancer and the load leveler.
