Abstract
Using large numbers of small, inexpensive devices to monitor distributed industrial assets is a recent technological innovation. These wireless sensor networks can offer more detailed analysis at lower costs than traditional methods of monitoring. We have demonstrated that by embedding intelligence into large networks of relatively inexpensive devices, assets can start to monitor themselves, vastly improving infrastructure-wide asset management. Such systems can offer a predictive maintenance capability by looking at data trends and events, making intelligent infrastructure a reality.
