Abstract
As unique railway subsystems have evolved to be, the overall system can be shown to be amenable to the standardised approaches to enterprise management for complex process industries such as food preparation and petrochemical processing. This paper will outline one of the most common software and standardisation approaches, widely adopted in other industries, and identifies similarities within the railway industry that allows the delivery of real benefits for railway stakeholders - not only in terms of asset management and condition monitoring, but also in terms of whole-enterprise benefits. We consider whether Railway Condition Monitoring really is as simple as shelling peas, baking cakes or refining petrol.
