Abstract :
Modem manufacturing systems must follow a repeatable and accurate behaviour. The thermal behaviour of modern manufacturing systems is a very important part of a unitary concept for design, testing, control and reception. Unfortunately, according to a CIRP evaluation, more than 50% of machining errors at the modern manufacturing systems are due to the thermal phenomena [J. Bryan, 1990]. The author has studied the problem more than 30 years and he had his doctorate in this field. The paper presents some of the author\´s results obtained at the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca and at the University of Stuttgart, Germany. The main topic of the paper is testing under thermal stress and reliability of manufacturing systems. The experimental researches were focused on the testing of the thermal behaviour of the Romanian grinding machines with a real research relevant, the development of new trends in the design, construction and testing of manufacturing systems. There were some first steps (in the years \´70 -\´80) of the advanced quality concepts in Romania, according to the national and international standards. The author carried out for the first time in Romania the thermographical study of machine tools. The thermographical study, as an image processing, place the paper in an other, supplementary topic of this Conference. One of the latest researches of the author: "analysis of thermal behaviour of new types of machine tools" were carried out at the University of Stuttgart and granted from the NATO.
