Abstract :
One of the major challenges in mobile ad hoc networks is the management of spectrum exploitation. Without base stations to perform resource allocation, current WLAN-based ad hoc networks operate on a single channel although there are three non-overlapping channels for 802.11b/g and twelve non- overlapping channels for 802.11a leading to the wastage of spectrum. This paper proposes and investigates the implementation of opportunistic radio in mobile ad hoc networks. With this approach, physical spectrum sensing information is utilised in order to determine spectrum availability and to make decisions on spectrum allocation accordingly. This therefore allows more efficient and dynamic use of resources. The paper also provides simulation results showing potential benefits in specific scenarios with the implementation of an opportunistic radio link in terms of system performance including network throughput and average packet delay.
