  • Abstract
    The significant challenge for current and future collaborative design systems is that of providing dynamically reconfiguration and integration for complicated product development. Service-oriented architecture (SOA) has been proposed as a technology facilitator to create systems by encapsulating, composing and reconfiguring legacy systems and software rather than reprogramming. This paper presents the applicability of SOA to the framework of collaborative design system. The applicability of SOA and Web services technologies enable the framework to utilize and integrate effectively various engineering resources on the distributed and heterogeneous computing environments. In addition, knowledge based engineering and virtual reality technologies are applied in the system to support multi-domain expert collaborative design. And key technologies of the model are researched, includes knowledge acquisition and application, X3D based visual collaborative design, system integration and reconstruction. Finally, one application example of full tunnel boring machine (TBM) main frame is given to illustrate the operations of the SOA based collaborative design system.
