Abstract :
The development of technology for fabricating second generation high temperature superconductor (2 G HTS) has enabled high field magnets made of 2 G HTS. In this paper, we report recent advancements in the metrics of critical current, length and infield properties of 2 G HTS wire and the performance of 2 G HTS magnets. Critical current (Ic) of 813 A/cm-width at 77 K and self-field has been achieved on 1 meter lengths of 12 mm-wide wire. An Ic of 185.6 A/cm-width at 77 K and 1 Tesla has been obtained. For Ic on long lengths, 314 A/cm-width on 202 m and 200 A/cm-width on 945 m have been achieved. We have constructed magnets with 2 G HTS wire. A solenoid made with 2 G HTS wire generated magnetic field of 0.96 Tesla at 77 K. At 4.2 K, a 2 G HTS magnet generated 9.8 Tesla. When inserted in a 19 Tesla background field, it generated 26.8 Tesla, which is a world record high magnetic field for a superconducting magnet.
