Halbach array magnet and its application to PM spherical motor

Halbach array as a new type of magnet array had been highly attached importance to since it was proposed. The application domain of PM motor was greatly widened because of excellent performance of Halbach array magnets. The Halbach array PM motor has many merits such as simple structure, light weight and low loss. In this paper, Halbach array magnets are classified and analyzed according to magnet structure and magnetization direction. The research situations of different Halbach array magnets are reviewed. Two kinds of spherical Halbach array magnets with one-layer and multi-layer poles which can be applied to the spherical PM motor are studied. In the end, the new manufacturing methods of Halbach array magnet are also discussed.
