Abstract :
Satellite altimeter data processing techniques are maturing for open ocean applications, but require more attention where continental shelves and marginal seas are concerned. Advanced and dedicated measurement correction approaches are needed to enhance the quality of coastal altimeter data and its influence on improved ocean circulation modeling and prediction. This study demonstrates one approach to sensitivity assessment of altimeter sea level data when processed using a candidate coastal correction in comparison to the standard open-ocean correction. We provide this evaluation for TOPEX altimeter data observed in the GOM-MAB coastal region with a focus on sea level corrections associated with tidal, barotropic, and atmospheric water vapor impacts.
