Abstract
A new approach to operational oil pollution monitoring in coastal zones is discussed, consisting in the use of visual and IR remote sensing data as supplement to SAR data. Results of satellite monitoring campaigns based on this approach and conducted in the framework of national and international projects in the Black, Azov and Baltic Seas are presented. The campaigns provided rich material for the study of hydrodynamic processes in the regions, in particular, for the detailing of water circulation mechanisms. The effect of water circulation patterns on the dynamics of oil pollution is investigated.
