Abstract
The combined on-line identification and optimization approach developed by Bamberger and Isermann is applied to two chemical processes systems. The first example is the unconstrained optimization of the stirred reactors in series proposed by Garcia and Morari. The second is a binary distillation column operating under constraints on some of the output variables. The method of Bamberger and Isermann is extended to the constrained case through the reformulation of the optimization problem as a linear programming problem.
