Abstract :
If the fault modes of a process instrumentation system can be related to the coefficients in the mathematical model of the system, then isolation of causes of system malfunction may be possible. We describe a procedure for fault diagnosability in the design of instrumentation and indicate the circumstances under which complete diagnosis is possible, namely that the model parameters are uniquely (globally) identifiable. An example of a feedback control system is used to illustrate the basic concepts.
