Abstract :
This paper describes the use of single-chip microprocessors for multivariable estimation (filtering) and control applications. The application covers an industrial heat exchanger in which the states are estimated and multivariable controls are implemented. The heat exchanger is modeled and simulated as a second order system. Input variables are the flows of hot and cold side. Output variables are the exit temperature of cold liquid and the heat being transferred. The state variables are the exit temperatures of shell (cold liquid) and tube (hot liquid) sides. A one-chip microprocessor is used for measurements and estimation of states from output, and the other chip is used for control functions of pole assignment of a desired closed loop performance.
