  • Abstract
A performance analysis of the oxygen transport system emphasizes the importance of peripheral versus central control, implying a complex balance within an overall control hierarchy. Experimental results support this hypothesis and indicate that the relative importance of any level in the hierarchy is state- and time-dependent.
