Abstract
The concept of structural control loop constraints is introduced to formulate a new approach to the synthesis of process control systems. The synthesis is formulated within the framework of model reference schemes (or inferential control, internal model control) whereby the fundamental limitations to perfect control can be systematically analyzed. A structural sensitivity analysis and screening strategy is developed to assess the control quality offered by different control systems. The use of the technique is illustrated by some physical examples.
