Abstract
In this paper we address the problem of approximate observer design for linear and a special class of bilinear systems. In contrast to the well-known reduced-order observers, the approximate observers proposed in this paper are developed based upon the internally balanced model reduction of the designed observers. Simulation results obtained from the numerical design procedures are included to illustrate the difference between the reduced-order and the approximate observers.
