Abstract
A theory is presented for designing fiber optic sensors to measure feedback control laws based on distributed models of flexible structures. The sensors are designed so that the compensator requires only a first-order dynamic observer, as opposed to an infinite-dimensional state estimator. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the existence of such sensors, and numerical results for optimal control of an Euler-Bernoulli beam are presented.
