  • Abstract
One of the main applications of the national communication satellite system "DFS-Kopernikus" of the Deutsche Bundespost, which is to start effective operations in 1988, will be the provision of business services. These "New Services" have high requirements with respect to service quality. The central equipment necessary for control and execution of operations in this sector will therefore be designed with redundancy and be equipped with uninterruptible power supplies (UPS). This examination determines the effects of mains power failures on the de-central small earth stations, which are installed in the customers vicinity, on the availability of the DFS connections. On the basis of the results, it was decided that the small earth stations of the DFS should be operated without UPS.
