Abstract :
Storage batteries for computer feeding UPS systems are, in german engineering practice, predominantly rated for a shorttime performance lasting some 7-10 minutes. Given this high rate loading, we experience considerable variations in battery output coefficient with any load demand changes. UPS installations as a whole should therefore offer, under part load, a much prolonged bridging-over period than when supplying their nominal load. It is not however easy to assess such additional reserves in power, particularly not after a partial discharge. Hence the destinct expectation, on the part of UPS operators, of a reliable registration mode, i.e. by annunciator for the prevailing battery potential remaining to them in each case. The present paper outlines suitable designs for a battery status monitor, and the application of such a condition annunciator to diverse UPS configurations.
