Abstract :
This paper will describe the design features of an antenna coupling unit developed by General Electric. The electrical performances of satellites have been measured utilizing the subject Antenna Coupling Unit. The RF path established between the satellite and the antenna coupling unit effectively simulates the space-link of an orbiting satellite communicating with an Earth Station. The Defense Satellite Communications System (DSCS) III Qualification and Flight Models have been successfully demonstrated, with this special test equipment, to exceed electrical performance requirements within a simulated space environment. The Antenna Coupling Unit features computer aided testing, high test equipment reliability, accurate positioning, high repeatability from test-to-test, satellite safety, and extremely high quality of test path signals to enhance satellite performance analysis. Significant savings in manpower and reductions in test schedules have been realized using the Antenna Coupling Unit; more savings will accrue for subsequent satellite testing, for DS CS and other satellite or spacecraft test programs.
