Abstract :
This paper examines the problem of putting a distributed operating system on top of all seven layers of the ISO Open Systems Interconnect (OSI) architecture. Functional choices in distributed processing and current research activity in distributed computing are reviewed. Specific problems with interfacing current experimental distributed operating systems to the top three OSI layers are presented.
