Abstract
This paper extends the "worth of a watt" analysis presented during INTELEC 78 which allows equipment designers to estimate the worth of energy used in Bell System central offices. First, the results are shown to be relatively insensitive to the underlying inflation rate of the economy, but depend on an estimate of the relative inflation rate of the cost of electric energy. Then, FETs are examined to show that chip area can be selected for minimal life cycle cost, and that this cost is expected to become lower than that of Schottky diodes as the technology of FETs matures.
