Abstract :
The generators considered are of the solid state brushless exciter type, rated 50 kVA to 500 kVA. The following aspects relevant to the selection of emergency generators and to the design of installations fed by these generators will be described: 1. Different types of generators available. 2. Differences between the standards of VDE, BS, NEMA, IEC. 3. Protection of the generator and the installation. Factors arising from the different fault characteristics of generators and transformers. 4. Considerations pertaining to motor starting. 5. Influence of the harmonic distortion, caused by the rectifiers, on induction motor losses.
