Abstract :
This paper examines the characteristics, sensing and model validation of partial discharge along a 22 kV overhead distribution lines. A capacitive divider is used to capture partial discharge signals from artificially polluted 22 kV ceramic insulator covered in kaolin. With the available information about partial discharge signals, a signal generator is used to inject a signal with an equivalent frequency of 20 MHz into an un-energized overhead conductor. A wideband Rogowski coil is then attached at the other end of the line to work as a sensor to capture the signal. In this paper, a computer model is built using ATPDraw to validate the findings and extend the length of the power line beyond the limitations of the high voltage lab. With this finding the process of locating partial discharge in overhead transmission line will save the amount of equipment used and optimum spacing for setting up sensors.
