Abstract :
Wide area monitoring system (WAMS) using phasor measurement units (PMU) is being implemented for online oscillation monitoring using Prony analysis. However sampling at inappropriate intervals, though satisfying Nyquist-Shannon criterion, can still cause the Prony analysis to inaccurately estimate damping factors and oscillating frequencies. Hence, this paper investigates possible ways for checking the adequacy of sampling interval in Prony analysis. The condition number and total relative error methods are proposed to address the adequacy of WAMS sampling. In addition, a review of power system oscillations and its detection using Prony analysis will also be presented in this paper.
