Abstract
In this work, a new performance parameter, namely power factor, is introduced in the analysis of DC-DC converters. The power factor, which is used frequently in AC circuits, is now applied in the analysis of DC circuits. The derivation of the parameter and its application as one of the performance parameters in the analysis of a buck DC-DC converter operating in both the continuous (CCM) and discontinuous mode (DCM) has been carried out considering all the parasitic elements of the circuit. An ideal value for the factor ldquoKrdquo is also suggested with the aid of plots for proper selection of the inductor. All the equations are normalized and expressed in terms of power factor so that a user can easily study the influence of the circuit elements on the performance of the converter. The analytical results are verified using PSPICE simulations.
