Abstract :
This paper proposes a conceptual model that explains the approach of independent innovation of complex products and systems (CoPS) in PR China. Although increasing attention has been paid to CoPS innovation in developed economies, few studies have analysed the specific process of CoPS innovation in catching-up economies. The laser phototypesetting system is a landmark achievement in CoPS for Founder Group Co., Ltd. (Founder), the innovator that has become one of the leaders in typesetting industry in the world. The case of Founder is analysed, and the results suggest that niche strategy and technology integration play important roles in Founderpsilas success. Meanwhile, the mechanism of CoPS innovation based on niche strategy is studied and the model is constructed. The studies show that niche strategy is an important approach in developing CoPS by using the large-country effect, and technology integration could overcome the technological bottle-neck in CoPS innovation when external technology sources are available.
