An Image Enhancement Approach Using Retinex and YIQ

Abstract :
On a basis of Retinex and YIQ color space, a new approach of color image enhancement is presented in this paper. The original image in the RGB color space is converted to the YIQ color space, and the multi-scale Retinex (MSR) algorithm is introduced to enhance its Y-component. The two-dimensional discrete Fourier transform (DFT) is employed to accelerate information processing for MSR, while both the I-component and the Q-component of YIQ color space keep unchangeably so as to obtain a completely color constant result. Finally, the brightness and contrast of the image in the RGB color space are enhanced evidently and the color information is well reserved. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach is superior to traditional enhancement approaches based on YIQ color space or RGB color space.
