Abstract
This paper provides an overview of broadband satellite communication networks based on digital video broadcasting-return channel system (DVB-RCS) standard, with an emphasis on the dynamic assignment multi-access (DAMA) of return channels. An OPNET simulation system is developed to study the QoS performance of several combined DAMA protocols. The satellite onboard processing (OBP) and the self-similar traffic model are considered in the simulation system. Simulation results indicate that adaptive dynamic assignment protocols have better QoS performance, and the characteristics of traffic models will influence the QoS performance significantly.
