Abstract
For a particular multimedia application where compression is necessary, a great number of compression standards are available which could be useful. Generally, the decisive parameter when choosing is the quality of the compression, without properly considering the latency introduced by this process. In this paper we try to show that choosing a compression standard is a multidimensional process, and we have carried out an experimental study that show it. Finally, in spite of some advantages of modern compressors, JPEG still has a wide range of application, especially in real-time applications.
