Abstract
This paper presents an integrated variable gain amplifier (VGA) designed for ultra wideband (UWB) communication applications. A closed loop amplifier with series shunt feedback is adopted as the basic programmable gain stage, and its gain and bandwidth performance analyzed. Implemented in 0.18 μm CMOS technology the VGA achieves 450 MHz bandwidth, 20 dBm IIP3, 44 dB gain range with 1 dB increment, and 19 dB noise figure. The VGA chain consumes 15 mA from 1.8 V supply.
