  • Abstract
Directional antennas can be useful in significantly increasing node and network lifetime in wireless ad hoc networks. In order to utilize directional antennas, an algorithm is needed that will enable nodes to point their antennas to the right place at the right time. With omnidirectional antennas, while two nodes are communicating using a given channel, MAC protocols such as IEEE 802.11 require all other nodes in the vicinity to remain silent. With directional antennas, two pairs of nodes located in each other´s vicinity may potentially communicate simultaneously, increasing spatial reuse of the wireless channel. This paper considers the problem of designing medium access control protocols for ad hoc networks using directional antennas. Then we compare the performance of our approach with the others.
