Abstract :
In this paper, a concept for achieving directional transmission from omnidirectional antennas, using beamforming technique has been brought out. The additional hardware required for implementing such a system includes a multicoupler and a phase shifter or transmission lines of varying lengths. A programmable phase shifter would be capable of switching phases, giving an option of selectively choosing the sector of transmission. The advantages of directional transmissions, using such a technique can be as follows: (a) Directional communication, in a given sector in azimuth, can be achieved, with lower probability of intercepts in other bearings. (b) Directional beams would result in higher directional gain, giving longer ranges at reduced power. (c) The Electromagnetic interference from own transmissions can be eliminated by steering the beam pattern null towards other susceptible systems.
