This article focuses on clarifying the characteristics of undergraduate hospitality management education in research-oriented universities of China and of America, and analysing the differences between them, taking the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management at Purdue University (HTM-PU) and The School of Tourism and Hotel Management at Dongbei University of Finance and Economics (STHM-DUFE) as Examples. By searching the teaching plans and other relevant information about hospitality management education on the websites of the two universities, the study attempts to analyse the curriculum system, the courses´ classification and the teaching content of hospitality management education in the two universities in detail, and make further comparison. This study found that a relatively completed hospitality management education system has formed in China since 1980s. However, compared with hospitality management higher education in developed countries, like America, the colleges in China, especially the research-oriented universities need to do something more to improve themselves and make contributions to the innovation of hospitality management higher education of China.
