A hybrid BFGS-based method with global mesh refinement is presented to deal with pipeline simulation problems. In this method, a coarse mesh is first constructed. When the solution point for the computing nodes of this mesh is close to the optimal solution, a refine mesh is constructed thereafter. The value on the computing nodes of the refine mesh is defined by interpolation from the previous solution point. Then the final solution is obtained by the method. Two typical applications for pipeline simulation are given. Results obtained by the hybrid method are compared with those obtained by using a commercial software package to validate its accuracy. Results show that the average error is about 1%. The efficiency of this method is compared with the efficiency of a typical Quasi-Newton method. Numerical tests show that the method saves about 45%-53% compared with “standard” methods.
